Todorovden Todorovden is the holiday of the horses in Bulgaria, also called Horse Easter. It's celebrated on the first Saturday of Easter Lent and is in honor of the health and strength of horses.
What is the connection between Todorovden and the horses?
According to Bulgarian folklore, Saint Todor is the patron saint of horses. Legends say that he stuck his spear into the ground and begged God for summer to come. People believed that on this day horses should be honored so that they would be healthy and strong throughout the year.
How is St. Todorov's Day celebrated for the horses?
Early in the morning, the owners decorate their horses with colorful threads, tassels and beads. Their manes and tails are braided, and martenitsa or wreaths of flowers are hung around their necks. The horses are fed ritual bread – specially kneaded loaves given to the animals for health.
Horse races (Kushii) – the most important tradition of Todorovden. Horse races (kushii) are held, where the fastest horse and its owner are awarded. Horses are bathed – in some regions of Bulgaria, people pour water on horses to keep them healthy. This holiday shows how important horses were in the Bulgarian tradition – not only as a means of transportation, but also as a symbol of strength and fertility.
